I just bought myself a new iPhone that came complete with a year’s free subscription to the streaming service, which is why I caught up with them now. They completed the journey in late 2019 and the series was released last fall on Apple TV. And to make it interesting, they’re riding electric Harley-Davidson Livewires. For this trip, they’re riding from Ushuaia at the tip of South America to Los Angeles, some 20,000 kilometres. Watch the first two-thirds because it’s good entertainment with stunning scenery, as actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman reunite for the third time to ride motorcycles across the globe. ![]() Save yourself 11 hours of your life.Īctually, scratch that. Tom Wingo is an unemployed South Carolinian football coach whose internist wife is having an affair with a pompous cardiac man. A flabby, fervid melodrama of a high-strung Southern family from Conroy ( The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline), whose penchant for overwriting once again obscures a genuine talent. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Passion's Tide by Sarah West![]() ![]() Amber is an unconventional heroine in that she refuses to play the part of a fragile female, and Logan is hiding secrets about his true identity. Passion’s Tide follows these two characters as they engage in a power struggle across the ocean. But in the almost claustrophobic confines of the ship, there’s nowhere to run from her desire. As she gains allies on the ship and trains in the art of sword fighting and piracy, she must fight off the attraction she feels for Logan. ![]() What do you do with a woman who is unafraid to fight back? And how long can you guard a terrible secret? After a few misadventures in Tortuga, they set sail for England, Amber more determined than ever to prove that she doesn’t need a man to protect her. Captain Logan Jeffries has always prided himself on his professionalism, so when his fiery prisoner refuses to play nice, he has no clue how to deal with her. Captured by the infamous el Tigre, Amber finds herself heading on a different course from the one she set out on. ![]() ![]() But when her mother’s death forces her to leave her house in Boston, Massachusetts, and journey across the Atlantic to her homeland of England, she discovers adventure in the form of a rag-tag crew of pirates. For Amber Townsend, adventure was something found only between the pages of her mother’s books. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Books like the great alone![]() ![]() Then, a few weeks ago, I had a sudden realization. ![]() ![]() We also meet twice a month, so starting ANOTHER book club just feels like too much for me, even though more and more frequently over the past year, I’ve felt an intense desire to belong to a book club like the one I did in Texas. Which means that new books never get added to the mix. Here in Arizona, I belong to a book club with just those kinds of women and we do have really interesting engaging discussions, but it’s a book club dedicated to reading the Great Works of the Western World (which is a set list of books that were published in a 54 volume set back in the 50s). It’s been five years since we moved away and I still miss it desperately, especially every time I read something that makes me think, “I need a group of thoughtful, smart, funny women to discuss this with!” ![]() If you’ve been reading my blog for a long time, you know that when we lived in Texas, I belonged to the world’s best book club. Yet the desire to give reason a social or political assist is inescapable, because it is rooted in a paradox Pinker notes from the start, then selectively ignores: Rationality, as Rationality defines it, is an instrumental quality. If this sounds pessimistic for the author of The Better Angels of Our Nature and pushy for the author of Enlightenment Now, Pinker does write that “we can no more impose values from the top down than we can dictate any cultural change.” Hell, we can’t even “implement a fallacy tax”-a joke, with a strong whiff of wishful thinking behind it. ![]() In a world that distorts, withholds, or floods us with data, he writes, making rational choices hard and bad choices rational, we reasoners must sometimes be cajoled, pressured, and constrained by friends, employers, and governments to make the right choices. Beyond offering tools to think with, Rationality periodically hints at more pointed interventions, even a kind of what the author calls at one point “social contract,” as a further step. ![]() Revealingly, Pinker himself shows signs of doubt. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments A grief observed readers edition![]() ![]() Her books for children have won awards and received rave reviews, and include future classics such as Beswitched and The Whizz Pop Chocolate Shop. ![]() Kate Saunders is a full-time author and journalist and has written numerous books for adults and children. ![]() Can Any Mother Help Me? was her first publication.
